Hi *|FNAME|*,

Welcome to October - Cyber Security Awareness Month. The overarching theme for 2022 is ‘Have you been hacked?'. Cyber Security Awareness Month is a reminder for all Australian individuals to stay secure online and practice good cyber hygiene. To find out more, we will be posting tips each Monday during October to our social media accounts. Alternatively check out the Australian Cyber Security Centre's website or contact us for a no obligation security audit.

This leads up to the recent Optus hack. Personally, I wouldn't want to be Optus or in their IT department now as everyone is screaming and wanting details. The problem is that in the initial stages you don't know what is going on and you are busy trying to figure out what is happening, what has been comprised and then seeing how to plug the hole. They then need to assess the damage and inform the public with the correct information.

At the moment (and this changes daily or even hourly) there is a lot of so called "facts" flying around and we need to wait and see when Optus come out with the full details of what has been compromised. In the meantime I suggest you:

  • change any Optus account passwords you have.
  • change any other accounts you have that use that same password.
  • look out for any suspicious activity on all your online accounts.
  • request a credit check - for details see this government website.
  • implement 2FA on all your accounts - see 5 Ways to Protect Your Online Account.
  • be wary of any emails, phone calls etc purporting to be from Optus (especially if they are asking for money, requesting personal details or want to access your computer).

Remember the saying in the IT industry - "It is not if I will get breached, it is when". So take precautions now before it is too late.

For more information relating to the Optus breach or if you have any security concerns please contact us or check out our blog article on What to Do If Your Data Is Included in a Leak

If you would like to catch up to discuss your IT needs or just for a chat, please let me know via phone (0412 973 503) or email (david@dpcomputing.com.au).

Cheers,

All techs had a great afternoon and evening at the Adelaide Convention Centre for a IT industry expo and seminars. They also learnt a lot of new information from vendors such as Microsoft, Intel, WatchGuard and Ubiquiti.

Paul took this beautiful photo while returning from visiting clients on the Fleurieu.
